Departure guide

Departures from Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)

About Departures from GYD

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (IATA: GYD) is Azerbaijan’s main aviation hub, located roughly 25 kilometres north-east of central Baku. The airport handles a growing mix of international routes to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Russia, alongside a busy domestic network connecting Baku to regional cities including Ganja, Nakhchivan, and Lankaran. Whether you are travelling for business or leisure, understanding how the airport is organised before you arrive will save time and reduce stress on departure day.

Terminals at GYD

GYD operates two passenger terminals side by side on the same landside forecourt.

  • Terminal 1 (International) — The larger of the two buildings, Terminal 1 handles all international departures. It contains the full range of check-in desks, security lanes, passport control, duty-free retail, restaurants, and airline lounges. AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) and all foreign carriers operating international services use this terminal.
  • Terminal 2 (Domestic) — A smaller, more compact facility dedicated to domestic routes within Azerbaijan. Check-in, security, and boarding are faster here because there is no passport control for domestic travel. AZAL domestic flights and Buta Airways services to regional destinations depart from Terminal 2.

Both terminals share the same access road and drop-off zone. Signage at the forecourt directs passengers clearly. If you are unsure which terminal to use, check your boarding pass or booking confirmation — it will state “international” or “domestic.” The walk between the two buildings is short, typically a few minutes on foot.

Recommended Arrival Times

GYD is a mid-sized airport but queues at peak periods can be significant, particularly during summer and around public holidays.

  • International flights: Arrive at least 2.5 to 3 hours before departure. Allow the upper end of that range if you are travelling with checked baggage, have not completed online check-in, or are flying during peak morning and evening windows (roughly 06:00–10:00 and 18:00–23:00).
  • Domestic flights: Arrive at least 1.5 hours before departure. Domestic processing is quicker, but check-in desks typically close 40–45 minutes before departure.
  • Peak periods: Summer (June–August), Novruz (late March), and major Islamic holidays see noticeably higher passenger volumes. Add an extra 30–45 minutes to your buffer during these windows.

Check-In

Check-in at GYD is available through several channels.

  • Counter check-in: Staffed desks are arranged in numbered zones across the Terminal 1 ground floor. Desks are assigned by airline and flight; the departures board above the hall shows which zone applies to your flight. Counters generally open two to three hours before departure and close 45–60 minutes before, depending on the carrier.
  • Online check-in: Most airlines serving GYD — including AZAL, Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air, flydubai, and others — offer web or app check-in, typically opening 24–48 hours before departure. Completing this step in advance shortens your time at the airport considerably.
  • Self-service kiosks: A bank of self-service kiosks is available in Terminal 1 for select airlines. These allow you to check in, select seats, and print boarding passes without queuing at a staffed desk.
  • Baggage drop: If you have checked online and only need to drop luggage, use the dedicated baggage drop lanes. These move faster than full check-in queues and are clearly marked.

Security and Immigration

After check-in, international passengers proceed through passport control (exit immigration) before reaching the security screening area. Domestic passengers go directly to security without immigration checks.

  • What to expect: Standard X-ray screening of carry-on bags and a body scanner or walk-through metal detector. Liquids must comply with the 100 ml per container / 1-litre clear bag rule. Laptops and large electronics should be removed from bags unless instructed otherwise.
  • Prohibited items: Follow standard ICAO rules — no sharp objects, flammable materials, or oversized liquids in the cabin. Check your airline’s specific restrictions for lithium batteries and power banks.
  • CIP / Fast-track: The CIP (Commercially Important Persons) terminal and dedicated fast-track lanes are available for business class passengers and eligible frequent flyers on certain carriers. Check with your airline at booking or check-in whether you qualify.

Departures Lobby and Gates

Once through security and immigration, you enter the airside departures area of Terminal 1. The gate layout is spread across a single main concourse with satellite pier extensions. Walking distances to the furthest gates can be 10–15 minutes, so factor this in if your boarding time is approaching. Gate numbers are displayed on the departures boards throughout the concourse and update in real time.

The airside area includes a duty-free shopping zone with alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, and Azerbaijani souvenirs; a selection of cafés and restaurants serving both local and international food; newsstands and convenience shops; and currency exchange and ATM facilities. Options are reasonable for a regional hub, though choice is more limited than at larger European airports.

Lounges

Several lounge options are available airside in Terminal 1.

  • CIP Lounge (GYD): The main independent lounge at GYD, accessible to business class passengers, eligible frequent flyers, and paying guests. It offers seating, hot and cold food, beverages, Wi-Fi, and shower facilities. Walk-in access is available for a fee, and the lounge is listed with Priority Pass and similar programmes — confirm current participation with your card provider before travel.
  • AZAL Premium Lounge: Operated by Azerbaijan Airlines for its business class and Gold-tier frequent flyer members on international departures. Offers a quieter environment with food, drinks, and Wi-Fi.
  • Priority Pass and other programmes: Access via third-party programmes is subject to change. Verify lounge eligibility through your card issuer or lounge programme app before your travel date.

Connecting Flights

GYD is not a major hub for international connections, but passengers transiting through Baku — particularly on AZAL services — should be aware of the following.

  • International transit: If your itinerary is booked on a single ticket, your baggage will typically be checked through to your final destination. Confirm this at check-in. Transit passengers who need to clear Azerbaijani immigration and re-enter the airside area should allow sufficient time — a minimum of two hours is advisable for international-to-international connections.
  • Baggage handling: For connections booked on separate tickets, you will need to collect your bags, clear customs, re-check in, and go through security again. Budget at least three hours for this process.
  • Visa requirements: Many nationalities can obtain an e-Visa for Azerbaijan in advance or use the ASAN Visa on arrival system. Check your specific requirements well before travel if you need to clear immigration during a connection.

Special Assistance

GYD provides a range of assistance services for passengers who need additional support.

  • Wheelchair and mobility assistance: Request this through your airline at the time of booking or at least 48 hours before departure. Airport staff can assist from the drop-off point through check-in, security, and to the gate.
  • Families with young children: Dedicated check-in lanes are available for families during busy periods. Pushchairs can be checked at the gate in most cases — confirm with your airline.
  • Unaccompanied minors (UM): AZAL and most major carriers operating from GYD offer supervised UM services for children travelling alone. This must be arranged directly with the airline before travel, and specific age thresholds and fees apply depending on the carrier.

Before You Go

A few final reminders before your departure from GYD.

  • Double-check your passport validity — many destinations require at least six months remaining beyond your travel dates.
  • Confirm visa requirements for your destination well in advance.
  • Save your boarding pass to your phone or print a backup copy.
  • Arrive with enough local currency or a card for any last-minute airport purchases — not all airside vendors accept foreign cards reliably.
  • Check your airline’s current baggage allowance to avoid fees at the desk.
