Airport architecture

Turkish architecture studio ‘Autoban’ made amazing designed giant wooden “cocoons” for the interior of the brand-new international terminal at Baku air-port in Azerbaijan.

Autoban’s design spans the many passenger areas inside the triangular terminal building by simply engineering firm Arup, and that is split over 4 stages.

Concave external glass walls lean out of their bases, curving across the corners to wrap the beautiful structure.

Six million passengers over 1 year are expected to enter throughout the glass bubbles that lead into the full-height check-in area, and that is scattered with trees as well as with structural columns.

“The main idea was to make it different from the other mainstream airports, “Autoban’s cofounder Seyhan Ozdemir explained to a newspaper. “While traveling has developed into a huge part of your lives, we believe as makers/designers it’s our goal to make it as enjoyable as possible for the public by changing the fundamentals of such transportation hubs.

Wooden pods on the most first and notable level – described as “cocoons” by the designers – bars, shopping kiosks, house cafes and other amenities including luggage storage space and a children’s play area.

“The use of the cocoons is flexible and it’s also expected they will change after some time as the airport terminal evolves,” Ozdemir stated.

Each is clad inside a diamond-shaped solid ayous wooden shingles covered with one of those oak veneers, creating shells across the different-sized forms.

They’ve adopted the architectural structure in this terminal and played with micro-architecture from the cavernous space to bring it down a notch to a more human scale, so that it would feel like a nest. “Said Ozdemir.

Identical wooden patterns cover the curved edges of floorboards plates around atrium places and escalators.

Hexagonal skylights leak the domed roof, interspersed with lights in similar shapes built-into a frame of triangular parts that cover the hall.

Triangular grills also design the ceiling of luggage reclaim, mirrored by the layout of floor tiles.

‘Autoban’ also created 4 “Salam Lounges” for business-class passengers that has a fast-track security option.

Baku’s air-port was renamed in 2004 right after former Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev, whose name has been given to the Zaha Hadid-designed cultural Centre
